ESCHER - a visual database editor

Today, in economy, managment and administration, relational database systems supplying SQL (Structured Query Language) are widely used. Storage and presentation of data is oriented by simple ("flat") tables.

Research, science and technical applications demand for stronger structuring facilities: nested ("deep") tables, lists, sets and graphics. Therefore, the relational model has to be extended, new forms of interaction have to be found.

In an editor prototype, which has been developed by the database research group, tree-like storage structures, methods of visual presentation and query techniques for complex objects are tested. Here the cursor concept, also refered as `finger' (GIF, ca. 31 KB) is brought in action.

Unusual solutions, e. g. a self referencing meta scheme (GIF, ca. 27 KB), realized as loop, remind one of the "impossible worlds" by the dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher (1898-1972).
